✽ FINAL THOUGHTS ✽
2023 was overall a good year, though with a caveat. I wrote quite a few things that I'm very proud of, and there were only a couple that I could do without. I really let myself experiment with different formats and styles, and I also let myself lean into the more contemplative, melancholic vibe that I've been enjoying. So I'm pleased with what I've done this year, but (and here comes the caveat) I also want to do something different next year.
This year has been a one of self-discovery and transition. A large part of reason for writing fic, personally, has always been a means of exorcising the demons in my head that give me shippy feels. That has always been balanced with my love of both storytelling (as in, communicating ideas) and writing in and of itself (as in, the technicalities of making Good Words into Good Sentences into Good Paragraphs and so on). In the last year, the scales have tipped much more in the latter direction, and I want to pursue that more in 2024 - whether that's in kpop ficdom or otherwise.
I have a lot of thoughts on fic writing and its value to me, which I will share at some point I'm sure. But I think there is something unique about writing fanfic as opposed to writing original fiction - I used to say it was the sense of community that comes with fic writing, and in some ways that's true. But it goes deeper than that. There's an intertextuality implicit in all fic writing (even rpf), a sense of transformation and interpolation and metamorphosis that sets my creativity on fire. It's something that I treasure a lot, and I want to find a way to harness that creative energy in a way that is sustainable for me. So that, in a broad and very vague sense, is my goal for 2024. Watch this space!
